In Guiuan Town: a Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) emergency team has started medical activities in the far east of Samar island, where the typhoon first struck. The MSF medics are working with two doctors from the Philippines Ministry of Health. The majority of patients have lacerations or wounds that have become infected.
Guiuan Town itself, with a population of around 45,000 people, is almost totally destroyed, and the hospital is extremely badly damaged. In other areas affected by the path of the typhoon, MSF teams are setting up medical and relief activities, and further teams are conducting assessments to identify areas in particular need of emergency response.
